Anniversary Talk: John Harrison 1693-1776: Influences and Influence

Anniversary Talk: John Harrison 1693-1776: Influences and Influence

This illustrated talk takes a look at the extraordinary story of John Harrison and his work in developing navigational clocks and watches for use at sea – solving the problem of establishing the ship’s latitude. Influences on his work become evident through examination of the mechanical ‘DNA’ found in his sea clocks and, in turn, his innovations can be seen in the work of his contemporaries and, perhaps surprisingly, in modern horology and beyond. Rory McEvoy, curator of horology at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich looks after the charismatic megafauna of the Royal Observatory that are otherwise known as the Harrison timekeepers.
