In August 1914, The Panama Canal was opened to through traffic – it had taken 35 years, cost £15bn (in today’s money), claimed over 30,000 lives and ruined 800,000 French investors.  A fascinating story of extraordinarily ambitious engineering, heroic endeavour, the conquering of Yellow Fever combined with cutting edge technology. Hamish Donaldson will tell the story of this amazing canal and the addition of a third set of giant locks that opened only last year.
